Introduction

Masters of Science Degree in Animal Breeding and Genetics is a programme building capacity in the application of science and technology in the genetic improvement of various livestock species through well planned and co-ordinated training and research. It is designed in response to the growing need for graduates with the capacity to apply advanced scientific and technological knowledge and skills of Animal Breeding in training, research, sustainable
utilisation and conservation and policy decisions in animal genetic resources. The program onsists of coursework, research and writing of a thesis. Coursework covers advanced aspects Animal Breeding and Genetics, Animal Physiology and Adaptation and Biometrics.

Justification

Animal breeding is increasingly dominated by application of science and technology, rapid development of computer and information technology for data collection and analysis, and enetic evaluation procedures in livestock populations and the use of reproductive and molecular genetic techniques for rapid rates of genetic gain. The MSc Animal Breeding and enetics develops highly knowledgeable and skilled professionals in the application of scientific
principles and new technologies in advancing animal breeding techniques and methodologies for the changing circumstances in the livestock industry. The graduates of this programme are ighly trained technologists and scientists for the livestock industry at farm enterprise, training, research, extension, conservation and policy making.

Objectives

The MSc Animal Breeding and Genetics programme is to develop graduates with the capacity to apply advanced scientific, technological knowledge and skills of Animal Breeding in designing and managing breeding improvement programmes for various livestock species under various production systems. In addition the graduate should be able to design and execute research work aimed at innovation and application of new technologies that would further improve productivity in different livestock industries.

Admision Regulations

4.1 The common regulations for the Master's degree in all faculties as specified in statutes of Egerton University status shall be applicable.
4.2 In addition to 1 above, the course shall be open to holders of Bachelor of Science in Animal Production, Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine, Postgraduate Diploma in Animal Breeding and any other degree programme deemed relevant by the Department of Animal Sciences from institutions recognized by the Egerton University Senate.
4.3 A candidate with lower second class and relevant experience and scientific publications in refereed journals may be recommended for admission.
4.4 In certain situations, the candidate may be required to take some prescribed undergraduate courses in which a pass with a B grade shall be a requirement for granting admission.
5.0 Loading and Duration of Study
5.1 The programme shall extend for a period of not less than 18 months and not more than 36 months from the date of registration.
5.2 The programme consists of course work, research and a thesis.

5.3 The minimum load requirement for a qualifying candidate is a total of 45 credit factors, of which 15 are from thesis and the rest coursework.
5.4 One credit factor shall constitute 15 lecture hours or 30 practical hours.
6.0 Research Writing, Submission of Thesis and Examination
Each candidate will be required to pursue an original research under the supervision of a member of Egerton University academic staff and any other person recommended by the Faculty of Agriculture and approved by the Senate. The supervision of research, thesis writing,
submission and examination shall be governed by the Egerton University Regulations as stipulated in the University statutes and Schedule on Masters Degree Programme.

Course Details

The courses are coded as follows: the code ANSC refers to the Department of Animal Sciences, the first digit 7 represents the MSc degree programme; the second digit represents the different subject matter or specialisation area as follows:

  • Foundational courses (1)
  • Nutrition specialisation (2)
  • Breeding and Genetics specialisation (3)
  • Livestock Production Systems specialisation (3)

Thesis when followed with 9 (ANSC 799).

Examination

All examinations for the programme will be conducted in accordance with the examination regulations as stipulated in Statute of Egerton University.
