Masters Programmes


Masters of Science Degree in Animal Nutrition is a programme to build capacity in the application of science and technology in feed processing, feed formulation and dietary manipulation to influence product quality, health status and nutrient losses to the environment. It is designed to adequately respond to the changing situation in livestock industry towards multi-objective approach to animal feeding to satisfy animal nutritional requirements as well as the objectives of farmers, millers, public authorities, environmentalists and consumers. The MSc in Animal Nutrition consists of course work, research and writing a thesis. The coursework covers advanced aspects of Animal Nutrition, Physiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biometrics and Research techniques in Animal Nutrition.


Continued growth of livestock industry requires realising improved sustainable productivity that balances maximum animal response to nutrients with the multiple-objectives of major stakeholders in decision making process within the livestock industry. The MSc programme in Animal Nutrition develops highly knowledgeable and skilled professionals in the application of scientific principles and new technologies in animal feed processing, feed formulation and
dietary manipulation with a balance between maximum animal response to nutrients and stakeholders’ multiple-objectives. The graduates of this programme are highly trained technologists and scientists for the animal feed industry, research, livestock farm enterprises and policy making.


The course is designed to provide a comprehensive and well-integrated program in advancedanimal nutrition practice, research and training. The graduate should be able to design and execute research work aimed at generating new information and technologies in Animal Nutrition to improve livestock production efficiency and make appropriate decisions on sustainable utilization of available feed resources based on sound scientific knowledge.
Admision Regulations

4.1 The common regulations for the Master's degree in all Faculties as specified in statutes of Egerton University shall be applicable.
4.2 The course shall be open to holders of BSc degree with an upper second class or an equivalent grade in: Animal Production, Agriculture, Range Management, Veterinary Medicine,
and any other degree programme deemed relevant by the Department of Animal Sciences from institutions recognized by the Egerton University Senate.
4.3 A candidate with lower second class and relevant experience and scientific publications in refereed journals may be recommended for admission.
4.4 In certain situations, the candidate may be required to take some prescribed undergraduate courses in which a pass with a B grade shall be a requirement for granting admission.
5.0 Loading and Duration of Study
5.1 The programme shall extend for a period of not less than 18 months and not more than 36 months from the date of registration.
5.2 The programme consists of course work, research and a thesis.
5.3 The minimum load requirement for a qualifying candidate is a total of 45 credit factors, of which 15 are from thesis and the rest coursework. One credit factor shall constitute 15 lecture hours or 30 practical hours.
6.0 Research Writing, Submission of Thesis and Examination
Each candidate will be required to pursue an original research under the supervision of a member of Egerton University academic staff and any other person recommended by the Faculty of Agriculture and approved by the Senate. The supervision of research, thesis writing, submission and examination shall be governed by the Egerton University Regulations as stipulated in the University statutes and Schedule on Masters Degree Programme.

Course Details

The courses are coded as follows: the code ANSC refers to the Department of Animal Sciences, the first digit 7 represents the MSc degree programme; the second digit represents the different subject matter or specialisation area as follows:

  • Foundational courses (1)
  • Nutrition specialisation (2)
  • Breeding and Genetics specialisation (3)
  • Livestock Production Systems specialisation (4)

Thesis when followed with 9 (ANSC 799).


All examinations for the programme will be conducted in accordance with the examination regulations as stipulated in the Statute of Egerton University.
